C6. Closing Comments

David Shapiro

Lately Executive Secretary, Nuffield Council on Bioethics; Consultant, Wellcome Trust, UK.

We started the closing session with the message received from Frederico Mayor, Director of UNESCO. Next we had the plenary lecture by the conference president, Prof. Okamoto. It was an inspiring address. We then had a lecture by Dr. Ivinson. Unfortunately there is no time to discuss this thoughtful paper. We had four closing addresses, from Profs. Sakamoto, Qiu, Macer, and Fujiki. Prof. Fujiki thanked us for our participation.

On behalf of all the participants I would like to say a word of thanks, which is brief, but gratitude is long lasting. Firstly, I would like to thank those responsible for running the conference, and particularly to the interpreters and translators. We had long days of meetings, and they had to work much longer days or through the night. I thank all the organizers and we are hugely indebted to the organizing committee. I also give particular thanks on behalf of those from outside Asia, who have been made truly welcome.

In conclusion, with this conference, Asian bioethics has made a major contribution to the continuing problems of achieving some sort of universality in bioethics. The problems of achieving this will continue, but we congratulate our Asian colleagues on what has been achieved thus far, and look forward to what can be achieved in the future, and to the meeting next year as well.
